First ever mission week in Subotica, Serbia

The MOET team arrived safely in Serbia yesterday (Monday). Heike writes:

We’ve arrived this afternoon in Subotica, a city in northern Serbia very close to the Hungarian border.  After flying into Budapest we drove down to Subotica where the mission will take place.  There will be a series of evening events in a café, and some daytime activities to invite and get to know students, including handing out coffee, flyering and doing questionnaires.

The city has about 100,000 inhabitants, approximately seven thousand students studying primarily economics, engineering and teaching.  40% of the population here is Hungarian and in our prayer meeting tonight we’ve seen people from the same city speaking different languages but being united in their passion to share the gospel.  Different local churches are supporting the mission in great ways, and we’re really thankful for that.

There is no IFES group here at the moment but one Christian student went to a mission in Novi Sad in April; he came back and was very excited to do the first thing in Subotica.  He says: “I’m really excited to share the gospel with my friends from uni and I’ve invited several of them. I also talked to the secretary of our uni and I was even allowed to put up a poster to invite to the event.”

At the prayer meeting tonight we got to know a great team that the staff worker from Novi Sad has put together. Only a few students on the team study in Subotica, but others came back to their home town to support the mission.  One of them said: “I’m so excited to meet people on the streets of my home town and I hope and pray that we can invite many students to the events.”

Please pray that many students would come to the events, especially the friends of the Christian students in Subotica.  You can also pray for the local team as it is their first experience of a mission week: Pray for boldness to invite people and to start conversations with them, and for good opportunities to chat to students during the day.

After having seen several great missions in Belgrade and Novi Sad we’re praying that students in Subotica would get to know Christ in the coming days.
